Ah, a man cave… Have you ever dreamt of having your very own space to get away from the world (your wife and kids…)? A man cave is a special part of the house dedicated to the man’s own pursuits, including spending time alone or with his mates. It should be filled with the essence of the things you enjoy – from football to a well stocked bar. Don’t know where to get started on your man cave? Check our tips and tricks below.

It is a cave, but this doesn’t mean that it has to be tucked away and hidden. Sure, you can build it in the attic or basement but you could also use the garage, an unused bedroom or even a good sized shed in the backyard. Take some time to walk through the space and visualize what you want your man cave to look like. Be realistic in your assessment of the space and how you want it to look like after you are done with it.

Before you actually take out the tools, spend some time thinking about what theme you would like to use as inspiration for your man cave. This could be anything – a particular type of sport, rustic hunting lodge, nautical theme or a book-filled library. Establishing a theme will help you make more targeted decorating decisions as you progress. Before you start your project, make a step-by step list of what needs to be done in order. You will thank yourself later.

Get Help

Try to get people with some building skills that can help you realize your plan. Set goals for yourself and your team to accomplish each step of the build process in a given time frame. You can do this with you friends or family and turn it into a fun DIY project. Designing your own man cave should be a fun experience for the whole family. Entertainment options are limitless and you can customize the space to fit anyone’s preferences (Let’s be honest, here, you’re not fooling yourself you’re going to be the only one using your man cave, are you?).

Table Football in a Man Cave

Don’t forget to install a fridge (to save trips!) as well as a sofa bed, if you’re prepared to pull an all-nighter in there or in case you’ve got an unexpected guest. Other essentials you can choose from are the TV, bar, pool table, dart board or poker table and chairs, movie posters, and bar stools. Add some personal touches. This is your man cave and everyone who enters better know it is yours. You must add as much of your personality to the furniture as possible. Before you go off grabbing pictures of the kids remember that this is your getaway room. How about that picture of that huge fish you caught on your fishing trip last summer?

If you hit a wall (figuratively speaking) I suggest you post your job on flattro and let the professionals do it for you. Think you can do better? Show us! If you’ve already created your own man cave, we’d love to see your pictures! Tweet them to @flattro_ with hashtag #flattromancave.

What happens in the cave stays in the cave.
